Private-boater expedition guide
A 12-25 day, self-guided expedition where the permit is only the beginning—boats, food, ice, water, camps, shuttles, qualified rowers, and two possible takeouts all have to work as one system.
Marble Canyon · Miles 0-77
Often days 1-5
The walls rise fast beneath the Vermilion Cliffs. House Rock, the Roaring Twenties, Nankoweap, the Little Colorado, Unkar, and Hance build steadily toward the Inner Gorge.
Use the first days to tighten boat systems and food routines. Hance is the first major rapid in the traditional Grand Canyon 1-10 rating system.
Inner Gorge · Miles 77-108
Often days 5-8
Black Vishnu schist, closely spaced rapids, Phantom Ranch, and the classic sequence through Sockdolager, Grapevine, Horn Creek, Granite, Hermit, and Crystal.
Phantom Ranch exchanges require a permitted itinerary and a strenuous hike. Do not build a crew change around casual rim access.
Granite Gorge · Miles 108-180
Often days 8-13
Long moving-water days alternate with major hikes and clear tributaries. Elves Chasm, Blacktail, Deer Creek, Matkatamiba, Havasu, National Canyon, and Lava Falls define the reach.
Camps and popular side canyons can be competitive. Keep a primary and backup camp plan and preserve time for deliberate Lava scouting.
Western Canyon · Miles 180-226 / 280
Often days 13-18+
The canyon opens gradually below Lava while substantial rapids continue through the Lower Granite Gorge. The Diamond-to-Pearce extension adds 52 river miles.
Diamond Creek uses Hualapai land and fees. Pearce Ferry adds moving-water mileage, variable winds, sandbars, and a separate vehicle plan near Lake Mead.

Weighted lottery. NPS normally assigns the following year’s primary Lees Ferry launch dates through a February lottery, then uses follow-up lotteries for cancellations.
Self-guided means self-guided. A private group may hire legal support services for gear, food, and transportation, but may not hire a guide. Trip costs must be fully shared.
Experience stays with the trip. At least one qualified boat operator must remain on the full river trip and meet the NPS experience standard.
Takeout changes everything. Diamond Creek requires Hualapai access and fees. Pearce Ferry adds 52 river miles plus wind, sandbar, storage, and road logistics.
